The Sunday Long Read (with Jodi Mailander Farrell), 8/18/19

Happy Sunday! Before we get started, a quick reminder that Don’s new ESPN series, Backstory, debuts this afternoon on ABC (1 pm ET/1:30 pm PT). The one-hour premiere episode is “Serena vs The Umpire.” It will also be available today on the ESPN app, with re-airs scheduled on ESPN (the first is tonight at 9 pm ET on ESPNEWS). For more on the project, you can check out Don’s conversations with The Washington Post’s Ben Strauss and The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch. This fall, Don and Backstory will return for “The Banning of Shoeless Joe.”

Now, we’re excited to pass the SLR baton to this week’s guest editor, Jodi Mailander Farrell. Jodi is a former Miami Herald reporter and editor who is an adjunct writing professor in the School of Communication at the University of Miami. By day she’s an assistant vice president at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, where she raises money to support culture and education programs. On the side, she covers cultural travel for Visit Florida, among other freelance gigs. She’s married to photojournalist Patrick Farrell (see The Sunday Still below) and they have two college-age daughters. In her 32-year career as a journalist, she’s been a courts and education reporter, an assistant travel editor, a home and design columnist, a mom blogger and a dining critic. But she realizes all you want to know is the best place to eat when you come to Miami, so go here or here.
