Hi, I’m Shaun Assael.
I’ve spent my career covering politics, sports and true crime, sometimes all at once.
My latest book, Dig Me A Grave, is a true crime collaboration with Dick Harpootlian, the defense attorney for Alex Murdaugh. The others include The Murder of Sonny Liston, which re-examined the Las Vegas death of the heavyweight champion of the world, and Steroid Nation, which chronicled my decade-long reporting into America’s performance-enhancing drug underground for ESPN.
When it comes to choosing subjects, I’m usually drawn to the push and pull between the hunter and hunted, and the middle ground where the rest of us live. My work has received National Magazine Awards, been turned into film and podcasts, and appeared in The Sunday Long Read. I spend my time in North Carolina and New York City.

The Sunday Long Read True Crime newsletter compiles the genre’s best writing, every month. Subscribe for free to get the next edition.
