Welcome reader,
I’m Kim Cross, editor of The Sunday Long Read’s True Crime Newsletter. I’m interested in narratives about complicated characters who guide us through some larger, complicated problem. I like highly nuanced stories that consider a high-stakes issue with a new perspective, maybe even one that forces me to challenge my own assumptions. I believe true crime writers can and should be respectful of victims and their families, even when they decide not to participate in the telling of a hard story. I believe stories are empathy machines that can help us understand the world—and ourselves—in new ways. And while I know not every story has a happy ending, I believe stories can help us make sense of the senseless. The things that tear our world apart reveal what holds us together.

Kim’s latest book, an inside account of the Polly Klaas kidnapping and murder case, In Light of All Darkness, was a finalist for an Edgar Award in Fact Crime, winner of the Truman Capote Prize for Distinguished Work in Literary Non-Fiction, and featured in a 20/20 documentary. Her magazine stories have been anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing series and featured in The Sunday Long Read.
